Message Direct injection plays a role in this with many new cars. The engine is not able to detonate if fuel isn't injected until its time for combustion. Fuel can also be added to the combustion process over time to control how fast the cylinder pressure rises as well. With port injection all the fuel is in the chamber when the combustion event starts so there is very little control on the rate it ignites at.
